Arriving at an idyllic wild forest terrain located in the Catskill Mountains of Upstate New York is an art residency housed in a wood barn. An existing renovated wood log house, functioning now as a garage and storage facility, is the starting point from which the consequent contemporary barn is born.
The black charred wood barn with standing seam zinc pitched roofing is made up of two levels. The mud room, for kicking off muddy shoes, is at the entrance of the ground floor, leading to an open exhibition space dedicated to presenting the work of the artists in residence. Also situated at the entrance is the library, across from a canopied terrace at the other end of the barn, suitable for taking in the scenic landscape.
Near the mud room is a bookcase ladder accessing the mezzanine, a free space for the artists’ personal use, including lounging and reading. The stairway near the terrace brings one to the bedroom with its balcony hanging in midst of the remote forest.
